Wellington Free Ambulance was founded by the mayor of the day, Sir Charles Norwood in 1927.
He was a man who believed that emergencies needn’t cost lives or money.
While out driving in his mayoral car, Sir Charles came across a man injured and cold lying on the footpath in Lambton Quay. He took off his coat, and laid it over the man.  This first act of kindness is what inspired the beginnings of your uniquely free ambulance service.

So in our 90th year we are celebrating ‘one-of-a-kindness’.  The things that make us, you, our region unique.
